Adopt-a-Site Units can "adopt" a campsite at KMSR or YCSR. The unit is expected to maintain the site in return for the first right of refusal in staying in that campsite during district and council activites held at the camp. The campsite fee is waived for one weekend each year. AOL Arrow of Light Arrow of Light Award The highest rank in Cub Scouting and the only Cub Scout badge that may be worn on the Boy Scout uniform. BALOO Basic Adult Outdoor Leader Orientation - A mandatory courser for any CS leaders taking their Packs or Dens camping. The course focuses on the safety-oriented policies and procedures of the BSA as well as many different outdoor techniques such as setting up camp, building fires, outdoor cooking, and providing an exciting outdoor program. Bear The rank designed for a Cub Scout in the third grade (or 9 years old). Blue and Gold Banquet A birthday dinner for Scouting held by Cub Scout packs in February to celebrate the founding of the Boy Scouts of America in 1910 and of Cub Scouting in 1930. Board of Review A review held to determine if a Boy Scout has satisfactorily completed rank requirements. A review may be held also to encourage Boy Scouts who are not advancing. For the first five ranks, the board of review is conducted by the troop committee. For the Eagle Scout rank, the council decides whether the unit committee or the district or council committee responsible for advancement conducts the board of review. At least one district or council advancement representative shall be a member of the unit board of review. Boy Scout A registered youth member of a Boy Scout troop or one registered as a Lone Boy Scout. BSA program available to boys who have earned the Arrow of Light Award and are at least 10 years old or have completed the fifth grade and are at least 10, or who are 11, but not yet 18 years old. Boy Scouts of America The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation's largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations and provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness. Boy's Life A magazine published by the BSA written for boys 6 to 18. It is an important part of the Scouting Program in as much as it: gives a boy a sense of belonging to a national organization, helps him live Scouting between meetings, increase his enthusiams for Scouting, helps keep him registered and active, and provides wholesome leisure time reading. BS Boy Scout BSA Boy Scouts of America The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation's largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. Camp Director The Scouter in charge of the administration of a Boy Scout resident camp or a Cub Scout day camp or resident camp. Camp Ranger A ranger's responsibilities may include keeping camp facilities functioning properly, performing camp improvements and maintenance, issuing supplies and equipment related to maintenance, directing the maintenance staff, and managing the off-season program. Usually the ranger reports to the camp director or business manager. Campmaster A volunteer Scouter trained to assist in short-term camping. Many councils organize a campmaster corps as a resource for their units. Camporee A district or council troop activity that demonstrates the techniques of living in camp. Involves a one- or two-night camping experience and may include outdoor skills competition. Certificate of Insurance Local councils are authorized to issue certificates with limits of $1,000,000. All others must be sent to the national office. All certificates require two weeks to process. The form can be filled out on-line at www.cnjcscouting.org. Chartered Organization A religious, civic, fraternal, educational, or other community-based organization that has applied for and received a charter to operate a BSA Scouting unit. Do not use the term "chartered partner" or the term "sponsoring unit." Chartered Organization Representative A manager of Scouting in a chartered organization who also represents this organization in the local council and district. Climb On Safely The BSA's recommended procedure for conducting unit climbing/rappelling activities. The eight points—qualified supervision, discipline, physical fitness, safe area, equipment, planning, environmental conditions, and qualified instruction—help ensure the safety and well-being of participants. Note the uppercase "On." CLST Cub Leader Specific Training - Provides the pack leadership with an understanding of the objectives and methods of the Cub Scout Program, for the position they are registered in, that will make it possible for them to be truly effective as they work with boys and parents in the Den and Pack. CNJC Central New Jersey Council CMSR - Commissioner Adult volunteers working at district or council level. Unit commissioners are assigned to units and should be a friendly resource to the unit leaders. Commissioner Meeting Monthly meeting of the commissioners at district level. CMTE Committee COPE Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience. (Boy Scout activity involving heights).
Crew A working group of Sea Scouts in a ship. There are usually several crews in a ship. This compares with the Cub Scout den, the Boy Scout patrol, and the Varsity Scout team. CS Cub Scout
Cub Scout A registered youth member of a Cub Scout pack or one registered as a Lone Cub Scout who has completed first grade but who has not yet completed third grade, or who is age 8 or 9. Cub Scout Leader Basic Training Designed to provide Cub Scout and Webelos Scout leaders with basic information about their responsibilities. Cub Scouter A registered member of a Cub Scout pack, 18 or older, or a professional Scouter who works with Cub Scouting. Cubmaster A volunteer Scouter, 21 or older, appointed by the chartered organization to lead a Cub Scout pack. Day Camp A 5-day, daytime activity for Cub Scouts and fourth grade Webelos. Preparation for achievements, electives, and activity badges is consistent with the program in their Cub Scout Pack. Camps occur in various locations through the Council.
Den Chief A Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, or Venturer who helps direct the activities of a Cub Scout den. Appointed by the senior patrol leader with the Scoutmaster's advice and consent. Den Chief Training A training full of fun, excitement, and information designed to train den chiefs to more effectively direct the activities of a Cub Scout Den and to train den leaders on how to effectively us den chiefs. Den Leader A volunteer leader, 21 or older, appointed by the pack committee to plan and direct the den's activities. Distinguished Eagle Scout Award A recognition bestowed upon a man who received the Eagle Scout Award 25 or more years ago and has made a significant contribution to his community. District A geographical area of the council determined by the council executive board to help ensure the growth and success of Scouting units within the district's territory. CNJC has 5 regular districts. District Executive A professional Scouter who works under the direction of the local council Scout executive and acts as an adviser to the volunteer leaders in the district. District Meeting Like a unit's committee meeting, but on district level. (Monthly) Eagle Scout The highest rank for Scouts. E-Scouter The electronic, weekly mini-news of the Central New Jersey Council is sent out each Friday (bi-weekly during July and August). Exploring A work-site based program of the Boy Scout organization. FOS Friends of Scouting Friends Of Scouting Annual fundraiser for the Council. Funds are used to operate the programs of teh Council. This campaign accounts for over 22% of the Council's revenus. Donations are accepted throughout the year. Good Turn for America National call to service by the BSA to help promote adequate food and shelter and to develop good health habits in our nation. Jamboree A term chosen by Baden-Powell to describe the first international gathering of Scouts camping together in London in 1920. The term is restricted to indicate a national or world jamboree. The BSA has a national jamboree every four years. James E. West Fellowship An endowment gift of $1,000 whose interest generates funds for the Council. Jamboree-on-the-Air Traditionally the 3rd weekend in October. This worldwide ham radio event promotes communication and understanding among Scouts all over the world. The BSA's participation is coordinated by the International Division. See "K2BSA" and "HB9S." JCOS Jewish Committe on Scouting JK Joyce Kilmer - A district of the Central New Jersey Council JOTA Jamboree-on-the-Air Key 3 (1) The council Key 3: the council president, council commissioner, and Scout executive; (2) the district Key 3: the district chairman, district commissioner, and district executive. Kittatinny Mountain Scout Reservation A camp of the Central New Jersey Council located near Branchville, NJ. Camp is utilized for summer resident camps as well as year-round weekend camping for Scouting units. Klondike derby A competitive Boy Scout event conducted by patrols to demonstrate proficiency in Scouting skills. Traditionally conducted in winter. Patrols move from station to station pulling equipment on a replica of a Klondike gold rush sled. KMSR Kittatinny Mountain Scout Reservation Learning for Life A subsidiary of Scouting in support of schools. LFL Learning for Life MAD Mercer Area District of the Central New Jersey Council MB Merit Badge Merit Badge A recognition given to a Boy Scout for completing the requirements for the badge. There are more than a hundred subjects in life skills, hobby, and career fields, with requirements and supporting pamphlets to help Scouts broaden their outlook. Merit Badge Counselor A registered adult volunteer at least age 18 who is expert in a merit badge field and shares enthusiasm for that field with Scouts and who certifies that requirements have been met. Mini-Resident Camp Cub Scout 4-day, 3 night summer camping program held at KMSR to provide an introduction to the resident camp experience. NESA National Eagle Scout Association NLE New Leader Essentials - Training designed to give a general orientation of the Scouting programs, aims, and methods to all Scout volunteers. NYLT National Youth Leadership Training - A 7-day, in-camp training program for older Scouts designed to strengthen both leadership and Scoutscraft skills and teach the Patrol Methold to take back to their Troop. OA Order of the Arrow Order of the Arrow Scouting's honor society that provides additional opportunities for a growth in brotherhood and cheerful service for Scouts elected by their unit. OWL Outdoor Webelos Leader Pack A group made up of several Tiger Cub, Cub Scout, and Webelos Scout dens. The pack includes not only the boys in the dens but also their families and leaders. PAH Pahaquarra - A district of the Central New Jersey Council. Patrol Method Pinewood Derby Cub Scout - wooden car race. The district pinewood derby is for cars (and boys) which won their category at their pack's race. (Tiger Cubs: verify first whether your district allows Tiger Cubs at its race).
Program Launch Annual meeting of all unit leaders to highlight Council programs for the coming year and encourage unit program planning. CNJC holds its Program Launch in August. Provisional Troop A troop made for a special occasion. E.g. a troop for boys which attend camp on their own because they can't attend camp with their regular troop. Troops attending a jamboree are typically provisional troops. RB Raritan Bay - A district of the Central New Jersey Council. Recharter Each unit designates leaders to present updated paperwork to the council. Recognition Dinner A dinner at district or council level to recognize leaders, spouses, and a few very special boys. Roundtable Monthly meeting for leaders to exchange ideas, fellowship, and, a few announcements. Run by the district executives.
Scoutcraft Use "outdoor skills" in most cases, "Scouting skills" in others. Scout Executive The chief executive officer of the council responsible for the administration, financing, marketing, motivation, recruiting, and staffing required for successful council operations.
Scoutmaster A volunteer Scouter, 21 or older, appointed by the chartered organization to lead a Boy Scout troop. ScoutNET A wide area network that electronically connects all local councils, regional offices, the National Distribution Center, the Center for Professional Development, and the national office. Scribe A youth officer who checks attendance and keeps records. The troop scribe is appointed by the senior patrol leader with the Scoutmaster's advice and consent. The patrol scribe is appointed by the patrol leader. Sea Scouts A branch of Scouting (actually of Venturing) for young men and women who are 14 years of age. As the name suggests, ships and boats are involved. SEM SEMEOS - A district of the Central New Jersey Council. SEMEOS A district of the Central New Jersey Council including South River, Edison, Metuchen, East Brunswick, Old Bridge, and Spotswood. Ship The unit that conducts Sea Scouting for the chartered organization. Equivalent to a Venturing crew. Short-term Camping A camping experience consisting of one to four days and at least one night outdoors. Silver Beaver Award A recognition given by the National Court of Honor for distinguished service to youth within the council. SLST Scout Leader Specific Training - A comprehensive training experience, for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, that provides an orientation to Boy Scouting, the patrol method, developing boy leaders, advancement and personal growth, troop operation, troop program planning, and the outdoor program. Summertime Pack Award An award for packs that conduct monthly activities during June, July, and August. Tiger Cub A boy who is in the first grade (or is 7 years old) and registered, with his adult partner, as a member of a Tiger Cub den. Tour Permit Permit designed to (1) assist units in planning to assure safe, healthful, and enjoyable trips and (2) assure that proper procedures will be followed in case of emergency. A local tour permit is filed with the council for a trip of less than 500 miles. A national tour permit is filed with the region through the council for a trip of 500 miles or more. Troop The unit that conducts Boy Scouting for the chartered organization. Capitalize only when used with the troop number. Unit The entity that conducts Scouting for the chartered organization; it consists of registered youth members and registered adult volunteer members. A unit may be a pack, troop, team, crew, or ship. Its affairs are administered by the unit committee, which is appointed by the chartered organization. Unit Leader The adult leader of a unit is a Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Coach, Advisor, or Skipper. Varsity Scouting A part of the program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men (Varsity Scouts) who are at least 14 but not yet 18 years old. The unit is a team; the unit leader is a Coach. Emphasis is on advancement, high adventure, personal development, service, and special programs and events. Veteran's Award A recognition status accorded to members of Scouting serving five years or more.
Webelos Resident Camp A 7-day, 6 night summer camp program held at KMSR designed to give Webelos Scouts an exciting, fun-filled resident camp experience. Webelos Scout (Pronounced WEE-buh-los.) A Cub Scout who has completed the third grade or is age 10 but has not yet completed fifth grade or reached age 11 1/2, and is a member of a Webelos den. The word "Webelos" means WE'll BE LOyal Scouts. Webelos Woods Troops mentor Webelos Scouts in the Cub Scout to Scout transition thru activities, exhibits and competitions. (4th and 5th grade Webelos) Woodbadge Advanced training for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing adult leaders. A week-long experience or two weekends with supplementary projects and meetings. World Friendship Fund The means by which Scouts and Scouters in the United States of America may provide material help to Scouts and Scouting around the world. Yards Creek Scout Reservation A camp of the Central New Jersey Council located near Blairstown, NJ, which provides weekend camping in lean-to and tent sites. Hiking the Appalachian Trial and canoeing are available from this camp. YCSR Yards Creek Scout Reservation YP Youth Protection - Training for leaders and youth members in the prevention of child abuse. |
