Camp Patch Design
(The following information was provided by John Seubert. John has served at many levels at YCSR, including camper, Kitchen Staff, Clerk, Commissioner, Dining Hall, Aquatics Director, Program Director.)

ycsr72.jpg   gwrr.jpg

When YCSR opened in 1972, the totem pole on the patch was behind the mountain looking right, symbolic of the abandonment of Pahaquarra, which was just on the other side of the mountain. Notice that the white and green mountains are mirror imaged from the George Washington Council totem pole patch that Pahaquarra used. The YCSR patch is supposed to be looking back at Pahaquarra, from behind, just over those mountains behind YCSR.

ycsr82.jpg   ycsr88_2.jpg

In 1982, for YCSR's 10th anniversary, Alan VanNatta moved the totem pole over to this side of the mountain, symbolic of our council's spirit moving from Pahaquarra to YCSR.

In 1987, for the 15th anniversary, I brought the totem pole to the foreground, completing the journey. I doodled that design quite a bit in 1986, anticipating the change I wanted to make for 1987. The border was supposed to be the same grey as the lettering, but the black turned out okay. The mug turned out better than the patch, and the neckerchiefs and tee-shirts were perfect.

Eric Schwehm provides the following infromation about the camp. You may read more about the original Boy Scout Camp at Brownsea IslandScout camp

Brownsea Island is recognized as the first Boy Scout Camp from August 1-8, 1907 where the Scouting experiment began with Lieutenant-General Lord Baden-Powell and 20 boys divided into 4 patrols; wolves, ravens, bulls, and curlews.

In 1976, George Washington Council ran a Boy Scout training program for Senior Patrol Leader's. The program was held at Yards Creek Scout Reservation, just prior to the start of the regular season. The program was called BrownSea double 2, which later became the Junior Leader Training Program (JLTP). Our neckerchiefs in 1976 were a light blue.

In 1977, GWC again ran Brownsea double 2 again at YCSR. That year, there were two Brownsea troops: gold and blue. I was in the course in 1976 and then was on the Gold Troops staff in 1977.

The Brownsea patch, shown above, can be worn by Scouts who attended the course. The patch is placed beneath the council patch and above the troop numbers.
